My Podcast Grear is here!

Lots of things happened today. Two Items to cover in this update.

Item 01.

My mixer came in. Phonic Helix Board 12 USB. I will admit I don’t all that much about the company or what they make. So, I looked for reviews and there where really non to be found good or bad. So I asked the people in the Yahoo group if anyone have ever head of the brand name and two people said that not only had they heard of the brand name but they owned model X and the step up from the one I got (the firewire version.) So based on the two review they gave on the equipment they owned I thought, why not. I was going to get the Alesis MULTIMIX8USB. But after a little research I found bad review after review of this model. So…

Item 02.

I got Eight 25-foot microphone cables in and thats about all I have to say on that.

I have had 2 Big things to happen

Two peaces of news to add.

Item Number 01.

I got the Zoom H2 in. Its a SD-card based digital recorder. I was going to use the iRiver iFP799 or899 1GB to record MP3s but they are no longer made and the only way to get one is used.

So I tried the whole ebay thing and kept getting out bid on a old use mp3 player. I have one question, why would you pay $100 for a “USE” mp3 player?

The zoom H2 handy recorder lets you record in WAVs or MP3s.

Which is so much better for what I wanted it for. I plan to plug my mixer board into it via the Line-in (that is, when I get one.) Another thing that the H2 offers that I would have never even thought of on my own; is the fact this little guy has 4, yes I said 4, microphones built right into the thing. I was testing it out today and man’ this little guy sounds great!

My old cassettes recorders never sounded so good.

So on top of it being as my recording device, it will double as a on-the-go field recording device. Right now I can’t think what that might be, but give me time.

I have gone to school (college that is) and they make you buy books as part of the course that your taking. Well Podcasting for me is a learning experience, and as such, it too demands books.

First I picked up “Podcasting for Dummies” and it let me in on what Podcasting was at its most basic level. And it also made me think, “hay, I can do this”. So I started this blog right after I fished the book. And as you know, this is my place to track my progress on the road to getting my Podcast up and running.

I should also mention that at the official web site for “Podcasting for dummies” that they have a podcast that goes with the book. [Note] that the podcast is not a blow by blow of each Chapter. They go beyond the constraints of the printed book. Thats good, because they give you stuff that the book never could, and that, is, what a podcast sounds like. They let you listen to the MOST basic to the MOST professionally. So go have a listen.

When I finished P.f.D. (I thought I typed “Podcasting for Dummies” to many times (oh, dang I typed it again.) So from now I will just type in P.f.D when I’ referring to that book.)

I thought to myself, self, what do I read next?

Well with a little looking around I joining a yahoo group on podcasting. I Read a lot of the posts and asked a BUNCH of questions. One of my many posts I said that I had read P.f.D (see, I did not type in_______ ___ _______!) and I was looking for other books to read.

Item Number 02.

I got about 3 people telling me Podcasting Solutions. I check my local BIG chain book stores(Barns and Noble and Hastings) for it and got nowhere. I even check 3 of the new/used book stores with the same results. So ordered it from Amazon.com. I can not tell you if its good or bad as I’ve only gotten it in as of January 8th, 2008 and I know only what I read on the back of the book. Its sounds interesting, we will see.

The other book I got was based on the fact that two of my favorite podcasters (Mur Lafferty and Rob Walch ) wrote this book. I’ve read the first chapter and I will say that so far, it’s in their voice. (That didn’t make sense. “In their voice” seeing how its a book and all, anyway. you get the idea.) What I’ve read, I’ve liked. But also I like their podcasts.

When I saw this next book I had to get it. Its more or less an update to P.f.D. The name of this one is (drum roll please) Expert Podcasting Practices For Dummies. Longer name, but the same two guys who wrote the first book, plus a new guy, wrote this one too. I’ve not done more than flip through it and looked at all the pretty picture. (What do you expect, I just got it and Podcasting Solutions today.) If its in the same “voice” as the other book was, it should be good.

So now you know as much as I’m willing to tell you, hehe :) So until I get more stuff in, Later.

p.s. I got the microphones in, YES!

End Occurrence No.04

I’m a little closer to podcasting.

I joined a group at Yahoo that specializes in Podcasting. They have a member base of 2000 plus. I figured that if I had questions this would be a good place that might have some of the answers. There’s strength in numbers after all. Here is a link to the group if you’re interested in joining.Podcasters
I have asked a few questions and everyone that has posted a response seem eager to help. I asked what was a good microphone and a few of them said the Shure SM58.

Shure SM58I looked around to see what exactly the Shure SM58 microphone was and how well it worked. Come to find out its a standard for the music (singing) and voice recording (radio) industry. Wow, I thought, where can I got one of those, well in my case 4 of them. I checked Musicians Friend and it was S99.99. So I checked over at BSW.com and they wanted $101.59 for the microphone.
So I tried Amazon.com and with the price $69.99 and shipping $5.49 that come to $75.48 a savings of about 25 US Dollars, not to bad. :) That gives me 4 microphones and a big step in getting my podcast gear set up, the only bad thing is, the microphones will not be here until mid January, how well.

A new world of content.

After I got my iPod and found podcasting I started looking other places than iTunes, and boy, there were a lot of places to look. All this content and 99% of it is free, that is amazing! I have come across subject that I never know where out there. There is a podcast for expecting mothers.Wile I’m not a woman, much less going to have a baby, it was very entertaining and informative.

I quickly found the Sci-Fi podcasts, Slice of Sci-Fi and the like.
But what was really interesting was podcast that are very specific on there subject matter, case in point The Signal  . I loved Fire Fly when it was on and when I found the DVDs from the first and only season I got them. The love and devotion that The Signal gives to their podcast is something that I hope I can archive with my podcast.

That should rap it up for right now, time to go to work, later.

Oh, before I go, here is one of my favorites places to go to find new podcast is Podcast Pickle

The Beginning: Every journey begins with a first step.

Back on September 24, 2007 I opened my brand new iPod for the first time. I downloaded iTunes and was looking around it to get a feel for it, when what did my eyes come across? It was called podcast, what the heck is a podcast? So i clicked on it and wonder upon wonder did appear. Radio “like” shows. (and in some cases they are from the radio.) So exploring this page and I saw something that said EscapePod I had no clue what I was about to stumble into. This site popped up, not much to look at not fancy pictures or much to be hones. but I did notice that there was a speaker symbol. So I clicked on it. Nothing happened, but next to it there was arrow pointing left and when I moused-over it the arrow changed colors. So I clicked it and it sprung to life, what I wonder. There was a computer/womans voice saying escape pod.
I listened to that and then a man spoke saying he was Steve Eley telling a little about himself and what was going on in his life. Then he introduced a story. This very story. Save Me Please There was a woman narrating the story, later I would find out about her.
It was that first 5 minutes with iTunes that would for ever change my life. I found out just how different a podcast’s
could be. So in the coming “Occurrences” I will track in this blog my own journey as it takes me closer to my very own Podcast.
That should be enough for tonight.
